Along the the hills of the eastern Gorge we will use this day to photograph glorious blooming orchards and fields with wildflowers – learn how to SEE such landscapes, rather than snap them, try out perspectives and lenses on wildflowers and barns – in the beautiful landscape around Hood River. For all levels – digital and film users.

A workshop in the tulip gardens where we will create a non straight forward approach to tulips. This workshop will be for both digital and regular film photographers of all skill levels. Special work on the making of creative close up photography techniques.

To photograph tulips during and past their prime can lead to some very beautiful images that look much like O’Keefe’s paintings. This will be the time and also the last workshop this season on Tulips.

An early morning workshop so the roses are still fresh for the day. Location: Portland Rose gardens. Come and do away with the snapshooting fad! Click, click, click, over exposed images…you have seen it all? This great and fun Rose session will show you all the ins and outs of working with the digital controls we absolutely need to learn to make fine photos and close ups that come out the way we want it. Composition, lighting, controlling light and contrast, determining precise exposure, digital and film CLOSE UP/MACRO techniques. These workshops welcome everybody, and each person receives a great deal if individual assistance and encouragement. You can be better than a pro!! But it IS a pro who will show you how to do it!

Time or workshop: Sunday morning 7 till 11 AM

At a setting along the beautiful and non touristy North coast we will have our workshop among grand driftwood, ocean scenes and capes: see the large opening photo at the top of page. Very focussed selections of our scenes, exposure and composition challenges is the stuff we will work with. This is for ALL levels of photographers as well as enthusiastic beginners who want to learn to improve their skills among great scenery.
After an overnight in a large rented cabin we then go to a fine beach with beautiful and large driftwood, great for photos and we end up in a rustic harbor for our final session and… hopefully a great sunset (see picture) – A student commented one year ago: this workshop taught me more how I look at things and what to do with all the settings on my cameras, than any other workshop I ever attended! What to do when we come to a new city? New Delhi….Vienna, Salzburg, New York..? Just point a camera at some prominent buildings and shoot it..? This is usually how it goes, right? But in this workshop you will learn how to look for catchy nice angles and perspectives and how to put a theme to your photo series to capture a real live image of any city you will visit. For new camera owners, and for all who need an excellent brush up. And when you hate your instruction booklet… F/numbers, shutter speeds, and what do I need them for? Histograms, exposure corrections, and is that for ME? And much more. You will learn which of those buttons and modes are useful for YOU and which you can ignore. This is the hands on theory part. After lunch we go and practice what we have just learned, outside. You will go home with a confidence that you are on top of your camera. You will also be ready to take any of the below workshops to get good at Seeing and Photography!

Moving water in nature can be very illusive. Sometimes frozen like ice or glass, other times choppy, whirling or amost invisible with light on it… This workshop will combine techniques, artful seeing and observing, and trying out and establishing exposure techniques to get just that kind of magic that beautiful moving waters have for us. Taking a specific subject, driftwood and its artistry of colors and texture, a wonderful and challenging subject. This workshop will take place on beaches that are full with the largest driftwood one can find..
Photographing this subject is our work and all the technical choices of a digital camera will be explained and used for each shot we make. Placing the best depth of field, contrast management between darks and bright areas, like bright skies, it will all be addressed.
If there is interest, I will make this a two day workshop that will include the famous bridge of Astoria and all the marine curios nearby…. Let me know!

After the success of the first High Desert workshop in May, a repeat for all those who could not make it to that one.
